Home Reading:

Every student in Grade One will have home reading daily.  A minimum of one book or 15 minutes is required. Students are to read their given books to you or with you, dependent on their abilities. Parents will be expected to sign off on home reading.

SIGHT WORDS

To increase your child's reading level students will be sent home with sight words to practice. Sight words are the most common words in the english language and in most cases they cannot be learnt phonically and but instead through memorization. Sight words make up over 80 % of all reading material so it is vital your child practice these words. Once you child can read the words instantly upon seeing them, it is time for a new set of sight words.

Writing and Projects/ Kid Spelling

Students have been given a weekly writing assignment thats prompts them to use kid spelling. Kid spelling is a vital beginner step in reading and writing. It asks that students sound out the words to spell them. Please do not write down words for your child to copy on to their homework as they miss this vital step.

Example of expected kid spelling

Given Prompt "Look at that________."

the student might write put cat or dog, mouse, doll, car etc. a simple concept they have thought of. Then they will sound it out.

CT is acceptable for Cat, KR is acceptable for Car, MS or MOS is great for mouse.

Real Examples:

One students wrote Dol Hos  ( doll house) another ISCRM ( ice cream) These are prefect examples of kid spelling. It is more imporant that students are sounding out and breaking down the word than spelling it correctly. The exception is sight words which will be drilled daily.

All students should be using the correct first sound, not necessary the correct first letter ( example Car can start with C or K, but a M is not acceptable) Students in the Yellow Room Golden Hour will be using some middle sounds, or vowel sounds as those are being taught currently.
