Whenever possible have your child teach school concepts back to you, research shows we are most likely to retain new information when we teach it to someone.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Here are the topics covered in Class Term ONE, organized by subject.

 

Math:

  • Counting 1-50 ( up to 100 for some students)

  • Knowledge of number formation and recognition 1-100

  • number recognition of pictures/groups and words. 1-30

  • Basic picture addition

  • Basic addition without pictures. Count on strategy ( fingers or dashes on page)

  • Basic Addition Math Problem Solving

 

  • Shape identification - Circle, Square, Heart, Triangle, Rectangle. 

  • Some students still struggle with the difference between a square and rectangle. Rectangle has two bigger sides, square has all equal sides.

  • Sides and Corners of a Shape

 

  • More and Less

  • using the crocodile method for the emerging learners. Students can identify which number is larger. 

  • One more. We are currently working on one less.

  • Missing Numbers

 

  • Skip counting by Twos up to 30 ( some up to 50)

  • Skip counting by 5s up to 100

  • Tally marks, making and counting.

  • Counting backwards from 100.

  • Starting skip counting by 10

  • Basic subtraction concept ( TAKE AWAY)

  • Some have been doing two digit subtraction.

 

The purple math, or mid grade one levelled learners have been learning place value, recognizing the tens and ones and carry over addition as they can add into the hundreds without regrouping. ( carry overs)

 

ENGLISH:

Vowels  ( A E I O U)

Long vowel sounds - students know that long vowels "say their own names."

Rhymes and word families

Beginning and Ending sounds. Some medial sounds since we are just starting the vowels.

Short Vowels. Each short vowel has a story. Have your kids tell you about it.

A is about an Ant " Ah, get out of here"  example words  cat, had, map

E is about a deaf elephant " Eh, what did you say" ex. words bed, pet, leg

O is about an Octopus "Aw, what a cute baby" ex. words log, pot, on

I is about an Iquana who is "i-i-i-i-i-tchy " ex. words pit, win, big

U is about an Umbrella "uh uh umbrella" Ex words bug, bun, mut, cup

 

SPELLING

Sight words, classroom words and learning vocabulary for advanced readers.

 

Science:

The human body. Labelling the parts.

Identify the parts.

Identify how many of each part. ( two legs, two shoulders, one nose)

Identify how we look the same, how we look different.

What the body is for ( movemement, exploration)
